DIRECTORATE OF INTELLIGENCE & INVESTIGATION (INLAND REVENUE) LAHORE RECOVERS SALES TAX EVASION WORTH BILLIONS OF RUPEES

The Directorate of Intelligence & Investigation (Inland Revenue) Lahore has detected sales tax evasion worth billions of rupees by a reputed company. The company had issued illegal credit notes of huge amounts in Annexure-C of the sales tax returns without corresponding debit notes from the buyers. In this way, the company suppressed output tax to reduce its sales tax liability for the tax periods in which illegal credit notes were issued and thus deprived the national exchequer from due tax revenue. The team of Directorate gathered information meticulously without disturbing the business activity of the company and initiated proceedings under section 38 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990 and retrieved the record and documents from the business premises. Thereafter, the company management agreed to deposit the amount of sales tax involved in the credit note issued/claimed in the return of March 2023 along with default surcharge. Thus, timely intervention by the Directorate has led to recovery of sales tax amounting to Rs.1358 Million and default surcharge of Rs.26 Million on 20th June, 2023. The Federal Board of Revenue is committed to eradicate the menace of tax evasion and tax frauds in order to provide level playing field to the businesses that are tax-compliant and contributing to the national exchequer. Accordingly, to place a system check on such fake credit notes, the sales tax return has been amended to disallow suppliers of goods to issue/claim credit notes in the returns without first issuance of debit notes by the corresponding buyers.

Significance of Diamer-Bhasha dam highlighted

By Masood Sattar Khan
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Pakistan's newly posted Ambassador to China, Moin-ul-Haq has highlighted the importance of construction of the Diamer-Bhasha dam which is expected to bring about across the board benefits in socio-economic sectors of the country.

The Ambassador in his twitter account highlighted the significance of the project apparently following the publication of an article in ‘The Global Times’ acclaimed as one of the most popular English newspapers in China.

"The key project is yet another concrete example of close Pak-China Friendship" the Ambassador reckoned.

The newspaper article titled ‘China aids construction of Pakistan’s ‘Three Gorges Dam’ despite pandemic’ had pointed out that despite the novel coronavirus pandemic, China and Pakistan were stepping up efforts on committed projects focusing on cooperation in industrial development, agriculture and the improvement of people's livelihoods.

The Diamer-Bhasha Dam and Power Project, also referred to as the ‘Three Gorges Project’ joined a long list of bilateral cooperation efforts between the two countries.

“As a country with an agricultural population accounting for about 60 percent of its total population and agriculture accounting for more than 20 percent of its GDP, the construction of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam remained of great strategic significance for improving Pakistan's water security and sustainable development and it has therefore been supported by successive governments,” Wang Zhihua, economic and commercial minister counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, told the Global Times.

"The Diamer-Bhasha Dam and Power Project, being the third largest dam in Pakistan, will achieve multipurpose objectives. It will increase the water storage capacity of Pakistan from 30 to 48 days. The people of Pakistan are grateful to China, which has once again decided to help Pakistan secure and ensure its strategic water security in the 21st century," Syed Hasan Javed, director of the Chinese Studies Center of Excellence at the National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad (NUST), remarked.

The dam is scheduled to be completed by 2029. During the construction 16,500 jobs will be directly created.

Actor Sarwat Gilani Is Engaged To Fahad Mirza

Actors Sarwat Gilani and Fahad Mirza are engaged to be married. Resuscitating the concept of true love, Gilani told The Express Tribune how she was fated to reunite with the man who she met a decade ago. What has often been dismissed as idealistic, the couple’s story depicts the notion that love conquers all.
The couple, who exchanged rings on October 11 this year, celebrated their union with an intimate gathering of around 70 on the roof-top garden of her residence. In an up-close and personal interview, a happy and love-struck Gilani flaunted her diamond ring with a twinkle in her eyes. While Gilani wore an Amna Aqeel outfit on her engagement day with hair and make-up done by Natasha’s Salon, Mirza sported a white boski shalwar kameez from Moosajees.
On the question of how and where she met Mirza, Gilani smilingly proclaimed, “We met 10 years ago, in the year 2003 to be precise. We liked each other then but I was busy acquiring a degree in Communication Design from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, and he was studying at Dow Medical College, pursuing his plans of becoming a surgeon.”
Explaining how grueling student life can be, she said, “Those days were tough as far as studying and getting the degree were concerned… Aur amma abba ki koshish thi ke hum graduate kerlain!” she remarked jokingly.
“Today, however, it [our story] has unfolded to be very filmi” she said. “Some time back, I was performing in a stage play Dhaani and Fahad came to watch it. Later, he texted me and said that he saw the play. That’s how we got in touch with each other for the first time after really long,” she exclaimed.
“Initially, I thought we both must be at different stages in life. People would joke about us being together but we used to laugh it off. And it just so happened that in the process of proving them wrong, we proved them right by falling in love, again!”
As the resilient Gilani begins a new chapter in her life, she doesn’t shy away from shedding light on her past, where she was married and got divorced a couple of years thereafter. She was briefly married to Omer Saleem, the brother of TV personality Ali Saleem. “I got married as a rebound. When you are vulnerable, nothing seems reasonable. You try to satisfy your heart and prove your point. That didn’t work out for me. I thought the love was merely a four-letter word. Also, when you are heartbroken, you lose faith in love. But life goes on and you realise, as you grow up, that being in love doesn’t mean you can’t be practical. You can be both at the same time.”
After her marriage didn’t work, she found solace in acting and painting. “I focused on my work, primarily on these two art forms. I was bouncing between these two loves of mine… I took refuge in them,” she said. Today, as her life takes another favourable turn, she is happier than ever and has given a special place to Mirza in her life.
When asked why Mirza is the one for her, she smiled and said, “Well, there have been actors and other people who have been interested but something or the other just wouldn’t click. I wanted commitment; I am strictly a one-man woman.” She went on to say, “With Fahad, there was familiarity, an association… and our family wanted us to consider it. Also, there was an established comfort level between our families. I have found Fahad to be a sincere person. With others, I wasn’t too sure but with Fahad, it seemed like it was written in stone.” Acknowledging how supportive Mirza has been, she said, “Whenever I tire down, he encourages me to strive and quotes Rumi to boost my will.”
With a wedding that is planned for summer 2014 followed by a honeymoon in Istanbul, Gilani looks thrilled about tying the knot. She hopes that the couple will have “a very exciting journey” but that one must know that it’s not all fun and games. “One should know when to give in and when to give up. Family must always be the priority” is the talented actor’s mantra.

Karachi operation watching only govt's interests: Farooq Sattar

MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar has said that Sindh government is launching operation in the city for its vested interests.
While talking to the media at Lahore Airport, he said that everybody knows about the dens of terrorists.
Law enforcement agencies must exterminate all the secret hideouts of terrorists who have nothing to do with the peace of the country; rather their aims are to horrify citizens in the name of so-called slogans and manifestos of justice.
He contended that all stake holders and political parties should make endeavours to make the military operation in Karachi successful, adding that this job can’t be made successful without cooperation and coordination of the MQM which is real representative of people in the metropolis.
He said that the MQM offered cooperation in this regard but the Sindh government is taking the issue with irresolution.
It seems that the MQM is being targeted as it had demanded an operation against terrorists without discrimination.
Sattar urged upon Sindh government to take measures for dispelling such an impression of politicized targeted operation in the city.
He said his party was never consulted about the targeted actions, adding that had the govt sought cooperation from all political parties, the targeted action would have been a success from the very beginning.
He alleged that the ongoing Karachi operation was not directed against criminals, as every single child of Karachi knew where the crime dens were across the city.

An open letter to SC: List of dual nationals submitted Begum Shehnaz Sheikh

Begum Shehnaz Sheikh

PML-Q’s former MNA Begum Shehnaz Sheikh submitted through an open letter to the Supreme Court on Monday a list of parliamentarians having dual nationality.

In her open letter written to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, she alleged that the cases of all the parliamentarians having dual nationality were not equally dealt with. She requested the apex court to put the procedure pertaining to reimbursement of benefits enjoyed by the dual nationality holder parliamentarians, on hold until the final verdict on the pending review pleas of the dual nationality holders was delivered.

In her letter, she mentioned the names of 20 dual nationality holder parliamentarians. She said a few of those, whose membership was suspended by the apex court, still continued to remain at their offices. The letter includes the names of Asim Hussain, Raza Haroon, Shahbeen Rizvi, Tayyib Hussain, Fauzia Ejaz and Jameel Ashraf.

Shehnaz Sheikh alleged that she was not justly dealt with despite she had tendered her resignation. She claimed that all dual nationality holder members of parliament were not equally treated. She said all dual nationality holder parliamentarians were not directed to return all the monetary benefits they had drawn during the period they occupied public offices and other emoluments from the public exchequer, including monthly remunerations, TA/DA and facilities of accommodation, along with other perks etc.

She requested the apex court to stop all proceedings of reimbursement of monetary benefits granted to the suspended parliamentarians until a decision came on the review pleas filed against the Supreme Court’s verdict of disqualifying 11 members of parliament.

It may be recalled here that the membership of Begum Shehnaz Sheikh was suspended by the Supreme Court in October 2012 for holding Australian nationality, while being a Pakistani national and a member of the parliament.(The News)

Ansar, Sarim burney split over hindu boy's televised conversion

Ansar Burney
The conversion to Islam of a Hindu boy working with the Ansar Burney Trust has split the Burney brothers with one defending it and the other calling it a ‘drama’.
On Wednesday, chat show host Maya Khan opened the doors to another controversy by televising live Sunil’s conversion in the prime-time Ramazan slot.
Sunil works at the Ansar Burney Trust, a human rights organisation whose chairman, Ansar, was recently in the headlines for the case of the Pakistani sailors taken hostage by Somali pirates.
Ansar skewered the conversion, called it a ‘drama’, and announced that he would sue Maya Khan. He publicly lashed out at his younger brother Sarim on Twitter, saying that he had dismissed Sarim three months ago from the trust on corruption charges.
Sarim Burney
“If we [want] to save our country, we shall have to fight against corruption, and I started it from my own office at Karachi,” said Ansar tweeting about his brother Sarim. Talking to the Indian media, Ansar said that “[Sunil] was offered incentives, and though keen, he had no idea as to what was happening.”
Sarim was the vice chairman at the Ansar Burney Trust, which was started in 1980 as the Prisoners Aid Society. He dismissed the corruption allegations, saying that Ansar had always handled the funds and the accounts. “Ansar should know about corruption as he was directly involved with the monetary affairs of the organisation,” Sarim told The Express Tribune. He maintained that he had separated their work for the past three months and formed his own trust, Sarim Burney Welfare Trust. “This did not please Ansar as he always wants to be in the limelight,” alleged Sarim.
Sarim maintained that Ansar had settled in London 22 years ago and he had been running the organisation and “keeping his name alive”. Today Sarim has removed the signboards with Ansar’s name, and replaced it with his own at their office in Arambagh.
Maya Khan
Sarim backed the conversion. “I have seen the boy fast when he had not embraced Islam. He did it of his own free will. Being miles away, how can Ansar say that it was forced?” Sarim also claimed that Sunil worked for the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust and not the Ansar Burney Welfare Trust.
Ansar has served as the federal human rights minister, and the UN’s expert adviser on human rights. He is currently in London and could not be immediately reached for comment.

Sectarian killings won’t stop sans tackling root cause: HRCP

The continuing spilling of blood in sectarian killings in Quetta and Gilgit Baltistan manifests a blatant failure to address religious intolerance in society, which constitutes one of the biggest threats for the country, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said on Wednesday.
The Commission said in a statement: “HRCP is alarmed by the continuing sectarian bloodshed in Pakistan, particularly in Quetta and Gilgit Baltistan. The killings demonstrate a disturbing pattern and appear to be part of a well-planned sequence. It has been stated that miscreants from Afghanistan have been involved. That may be one problem but it certainly is not the only one. The mindless bloodshed that we witness day in and day out is rooted in religious intolerance cultivated by the state. Politics in the name of religion has substantially worsened what was already an appalling situation. It is alarming that no one responsible for these killings has been nabbed in years. The people are paying the price of indifference with their lives. Rather than wasting time on addressing mere symptoms, the root cause of the problem must be identified and addressed. Instead of living in denial, we must now identify the policies that strengthen extremism and promote faith-based hatred in society. These constitute the single biggest threat to Pakistan.
In these perilous times, all those who believe in people’s rights, human dignity and Pakistan’s future must not remain silent. Otherwise the consequences for the country will be unimaginably disastrous. It is time for the government, all democratic-minded political parties and conscious citizens to join hands to think of a way out of this brutal vortex in order to rescue the state that has been held to ransom by extremism and obscurantism.”

HRCP has deep concern at Sindh University situation

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has strongly condemned the recent developments atSindh University where, following the killing of Professor Bashir Channar on January 2, unjustified action has been taken against protesting teachers.
A statement issued by the Commission on Thursday said: “HRCP notes with alarm that the services of two representatives of Sindh University Teachers’ Association, Dr. Arfana Mallah and Dr. Azhar Ali Shah, have been terminated and show-cause notices issued to other teachers. The university had only reopened a few days ago on the assurance of the Sindh Governor that the vice-chancellor of Sindh University, who is past the age of retirement, would be replaced in accordance with the demands of the teachers.
“HRCP also has serious reservations over the authorities’ apathetic approach towards acknowledging and addressing teachers’ concerns. It defies reason why the teachers must protests for weeks upon weeks before their concerns register on the official radar. The teachers have protested long and in a peaceful manner for demands that are not unreasonable: a judicial probe into the assassination of Professor Bashir, withdrawal of police and Rangers from the campus, restoration of student unions and removal of the vice chancellor.
“It is regrettable that Sindh University and most other universities in the province are headed by academics who have crossed the retirement age. In a recent meeting with the HRCP vice-chairperson for Sindh and members of HRCP Council, the Sindh Governor had agreed to look into the issues concerning the Sindh University. HRCP calls upon the Governor, in his capacity as chancellor of Sindh University, to rescind the decisions regarding the dismissal and issuance of show-cause notices to teachers and take effective steps to fulfil the government’s obligation to ensure an atmosphere free from intimidation and conducive for academic progress at the university.”
